Unemployment Duration and Individual Heterogeneity: A Regional Study
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the impact of individual heterogeneity and regional influences on unemployment duration utilising cross-section microeconomic data drawn from a representative random survey of individual job seekers for the English County of Kent. These individual-level data are unique in that they provide information concerning the personal characteristics of job seekers, alongside direct observations of both their reservation wages and job search behaviour. Such data are rare and, to our knowledge, have never before been utilised in a regional context. Thus, the paper contributes to the empirical literature by analysing the extent to which individual heterogeneity and intraregional variation in labour market opportunities impact upon the observed distribution of unemployment duration(s). This is an important issue for the formation and evaluation of policy. Our results provide new insights into the long-term efficacy of current microeconomic supply–side initiatives such as ‘The New Deal’ and related welfare to work policies. They also advocate a more active role for macroeconomic demand-led management and provide support for a more integrated strategy for policy implementation at the urban and regional level. This study investigates the effect of individual characteristics on the unemployment duration of job seekers in Iran, using information from the Labor Force Survey in 2018 and applying of nonparametric, semi-parametric and parametric methods. The results show that the probability of employment for married males and also Married females are more likely than single people. Regional differences in...
متن کاملThe Duration of Unemployment a Proportional Hazard Model with Non-stationary Inflow Rates
In this paper the effect of age, educational level, occupational group and regional labour market conditions on the probability of leaving the state of unemployment is estimated. We use a proportional hazard model based on aggregate data on incomplete spells of unemployment for males in the Netherlands. Effects of omitted variables and time dependence are studied in combination with a non-const...
متن کاملUnemployment Dynamics and Duratiqn Dependence
One of the major issues in the analysis of unemployment durations concerns the distinction between duration dependence of the exit rate out of unemployment and unobserved heterogeneity. Empirical studies rely heavily on functional form restrictions, which may be hazardous. We present a method for the nonparametric estimation of both phenomena. This method is designed to be applicable to aggrega...
متن کاملTransitions in the Danish Labour Market: A Regional Analysis
This paper analyses the transitions from unemployment into employment and out-of-labour force using a mixed proportional hazard framework. The regional differences in the transition intensities, individual effects and discouragement probability are investigated using Danish registry data for 1985-1998. The transition intensity from unemployment into employment is decreasing and the intensity in...
متن کاملJob search theory, labour supply and unemployment duration
This paper presents a structural model of sequential job search, in which the individual decision makers incorporate labour supply in the job acceptance decision. The model satisfies the reservation wage property. Given the level of the offered wage rate, individuals can choose the number of weekly working hours optimally, by maximizing utility subject to the budget constraint, Specific attenti...
